The problem with teaching chemistry is that the facts and ideas can be soooo boring (because there is just so much to learn) and that the experiments require special equipment, especially the measurement of the amounts. How you can learn the “book stuff” without having all of the life sucked out of you is the question. How you can do the “lab stuff” at home and still get the “right” results (not to mention understanding them) is also a problem. Anyway, I took a look at Amazon.com and came away with the following authors whose books you should at least look at.

Cobb & Fetterolf

Gonick & Criddle

Schwarcz

Herr & Cunningham

I don’t have any personal experience with any of them, but they were reviewed pretty well on Amazon.

If you just want a quick general introduction, you should get an SAT II Chemistry book and read that. You should easily be able to do it over summer and it has a brief summary of all the topics you’re going to cover. There are also AP Chem books to prep for the AP test, which tend to be more in depth.
