Pros: -Being with children is great!

-Making a contribution to many people’s lives.

-I love children’s books and get to work with them everyday.

-It keeps you active and alert.

Cons: High turn over rate, so you frequently have new co-workers. Long hours. Low pay. When you are at work, you are constantly working. I usually even have to work through my break. Working with other people is always hard; at one point in your career, you’ll be working with difficult children, parents, or co-workers.

It is a challenging, but very rewarding job. Go into it knowing it will be hard, but also with a positive attitude about it.

I love it, but it is not a job for everyone. The children make me laugh every day, they are so new to school it takes a lot of patients to teach them not to push or grab or yell and to speak nicely to each other along with how to listen to a story and cut and paste and ABC’s etc…. There is never a dull moment that’s for sure. Once they get used to school it’s definitely smoother sailing, how they love to help and do things themselves. They can be so sweet and caring too. Some people just get frustrated at the crying, snotty noses, tying shoes, cleaning spills and changing clothes. I just love the joy they get out of discovering new things every day, even something small like a feather or rock, and being silly, dancing and playing is great fun. I really miss them when we have a long break or summer vacation.

Being a Pre-school teacher is FUN, FUN, FUN. But beware, if you’re going in it, because you need a job, the money and you think it’s an easy way to make some of it – DON’T do it. Children can very quickly tell who is there for them and who’s there to make a paycheck.

If you want to do it, because you love children, don’t care about low pay, changing diapers, wiping hinies, noses and such then go ahead. The benefits are great, all the hugs and kisses you want (and then some). Children’s faces lighting up when they see you and come hurling themselfs in your arms in the morning (once they’ve overcome seperation anxiety). What more does one need?!?!?!? 🙂

Definitely not like being a banker! It helps to be prepared for anything- children who can’t separate from Mom, children who arrive carsick and covered in goop, crazy giggles, moody pouts- the day is filled with any and all of these and you need to be able to stand your own emotional ground and not feel the need to make everyone happy all the time. Part of what they need to learn is social boundaries and this is sometimes messy and involves their feelings shifting from angry to hurt to bossy to happy and back about 30 times a day. This is an exciting and important part of the child’s work and can be exciting to watch and accompany if you don’t take it on as a mission to ‘save them’ all of the time. The pro’s include; great stories, millions of hugs, a fridge covered in colorful drawings made with love, seeing the world with totally fresh eyes every day and, for me, being able to give kids a protected childhood in a world that wants them to grow up too fast. The cons include; messes, bodily fluids, the need to overcome headaches, PMS, etc and still be civilized and tolerant and a relatively low pay scale.

Being a preschool teacher is an opportunity to discover, explore and learn through the eyes of the child. However, we also want them to be achievers and realize their potentials and so we teach them concepts and values which are substantial in their future life-this is challenging.

A teacher should love children for who they are-their uniqueness, their needs and wants, their playfulness and behavior, even their nastiness at times. A teacher who loves kids can understand the why’s of each kid, thus helps her to design learning materials and activities which are interesting, engaging, fun and educational.

In my country the Philippines, most preschool teachers are paid very low but for me, no payment will ever equate to the happiness and reward of my teaching young kids. Remember, that in our hands lay the foundations of the future.

I can’t believe they pay me to do this job!

It’s fun and rewarding and honestly what other job do you have fifteen little faces greet you every morning with a smile and a hug. It’s wonderful and exhausting but after teaching middle school and high school for 12 years I also think it is a very well kept secret.

It’s great! Working with kids and seeing them grow and develop.

As for cons, it depends on where you work. I currently work in a private preschool with really good pay, benefits, and treatment. But I have worked at a for-profit center, and like a previous poster said, it is looooooooong hours, low pay, and high turn over.

You have to absolutely love kids. It is like being a mommy to 20 kids at once. They aren’t very independent and need shoes tied, noses wiped and decisions made, but I loved them and loved it. But you really have to love it.
