Teach them the song. If you don’t know it, ask any girl scout. I believe it is called Rise and Shine.There is a classic picture book by Peter Spier called Noah’s Ark. Get hold of a refrigerator box, let them help you paint it, and pretend it is an Ark-maybe with stuffed animals.

The funniest thing about this story is that it is such a violent and tragic story with an incredibly optimistic and happy ending. Telling a child-friendly version to kids while maintaining the heart of story is challenging and your question is a worthy one.

When I would tell this story to my kids, it went something like this:

A long time ago, all the people on the earth were really mean, except for one guy named Noah. They didn’t care about God or each other, which made God very sad. God knew he had to start over again, so he told Noah to build a really big boat called an ark. He needed to build a boat because God was going to make it rain like it never rained before.

When Noah and his family finished building the ark, God told him to find two of every kind of animal, one boy and one girl, (even the snakes, yuck) to take on the ark with him and his family.

The minute he and his family and all the animals were on board the ark, it started to rain. It rained so hard that the puddles turned to ponds and the ponds turned to lakes, until all the land was covered with water. It rained for 40 straight days before it stopped.

Noah looked outside and couldn’t see any land, so he sent out a dove, which came back. A few days later he sent it out again and it came back with a branch which meant that the water was going down. A few days after that he sent the dove out again and this time it didn’t come back. Soon the water went all the way down and the ark was back on land.

When Noah opened the door, his family and all the animals rushed out of the boat. They all looked up in the sky and saw an amazing rainbow which God had put there as a promise to never flood the earth again.

My kids would often ask where all the mean people went and I just had to tell them that they died, so be ready for the question 🙂

There are many versions in picture books at Christian book stores and even Walmart has versions of the story in kid bibles. A fun food activity would be to paint toast. Mix food coloring in melted butter. Let kids paint rainbows on the bread and toast them. Rainbows can be made with icing on cupcakes. Any craft that uses the rainbow colors is fun. (likr rainbow necklaces with different colored beads. Kids love to act out the story be pretending to be the animals. You can play animal charades also. You can even tell the story in a boat or make an art like tent. When we did a lesson about the animals we bought all kinds of inflatable animals and animal toys from orientaltrading.com. Don’t forget to serve animal cookies too! Have fun!

You can build the ark, gather the animals, hide from the rain, look for the rainbow, send out the dove…

it all depends if you want the story be just a story, or if you are going for the christian version. the web sights above are great. but make sure to check with your boss before telling the story. i got in trouble once because i told a christian version of a story and the parents didn’t like that i was trying to “push religion” on them. good luck

Using little felt characters on a felt board is always fun. Just explain that everyone had become very evil and God had to destroy the earth, but saved Noah, who loved God…and so on.

Just buy one of those Little Kid’s Christians books. That’s what my parents did. And if you don’t feel like buying it get your child’s toys and explain it. =]
