You’re taking the term ‘homophobic’ too literally. While it’s true that the term should refer specifically to a fear of homosexuals or homosexuality, in the common lexicon of the English language homophobia has come to mean fear, anger, hatred or emotionally neutral opposition felt or expressed about the subject of homosexuality. Language is not immutable. Spelling, grammar and the definition and usage of words alters depending on the preferences of the literate majority. Most people recognize ‘homophobia’ as a blanket term and use it as such, hence the reason why it may appear to be misleading to certain people in certain contexts if said people interpret it using the literal definition.

Yeah, it’s really a bad name for the word.
