I’m reading To Kill a Mockingbird for school and one of the questions I have to answer is What is circumstantial evidence? What does it have to do with Tom’s conviction?

the fact that he was there at the time.
If someone said you spilled over the milk in the kitchen, and you said you didn’t do it, but were in the kitchen at the time is circumstantial evidence.
The fact that Tom Robinson was “there” is circumstantial evidence. It doesn’t prove anything, but it doesn’t help or make him look good.

Circumstantial evidence especially back in those days means no eye whiteness except the would be victim. The would be victim was looking to seduce Tom, and when he spurred her affections she lied and said he tried to rape her. Back in those days all a white women had to say was a black man looked at her and it was a hanging offense
