Why was ‘East India Company’ named so, when there was no West India or ‘West India Company’ at that point of time?

because at that time there was a confusion to where india was..u must b knowing how columbus mistook some american islands to b india and that they were named West Indies later on..mayb dats y the companies were named East India Company..
