Why do people say, “you’ve been working like a dog” when dogs just sit around all day?

True, we tend to treat our pet dogs much better than we used to.

The expression comes from the days when people used dogs in teams like horses to pull loads; like the dog-sled races of today.

Now, we do it only for sport. The dogs are well-fed and meticulously cared for.

Such was not always the case. These loyal pack animals were put to hard labor, strapped together and beaten.

If a dog didn’t perform because he was too old, injured or weak, he was killed and eaten. It’s not too much different from the way modern corporations treat humans!

I think the phrase developed when dogs ran over 30 miles a day rounding up livestock.

I don’t know what kind of dog you have but he sounds like a lazy ***. Make your dog a list of chores, it can be normal dog stuff like fetching your slippers or washing the dishes. If he doen’t earn his keep sent him to the pound.

seeing as when dogs are generally given jobs they are for eating poo, garbage, and running around rounding up herding animals or traversing across the tundra for a few hundred miles. plus you get killed when you cant do that stuff anymore. licking your own balls is hard work too.
