The Army is basically a force that fights on dry ground and a Navy is employed on ships on the oceans. Some times an Army must be transported by the Navy and some time the Navy gets stranded in dock and need the Army. Nevertheless, they are both a military fighting force whose primary duty is to fight any war the powers that be send them to fight.

One of the PRIME differences is that in the Army, everyone is initially trained to be a combat soldier, a “boots-on-the-ground” gun-toter, whereas in the Navy, you are not. Basic pay is the same for all services at any particular pay-grade. I don’t know what current deployment schedules for the army are, but, during my time in the Navy, (1975-1995) during a 24-month period in the late 80’s, we were underway for 18 of those months. Not consecutively, but cumulatively, and part of that consisted of two 6-month “west-pac” cruises. That is about average for sea-duty, especially on a carrier. On shore duty, one is generally not “deployed”, and you usually work a standard 8-hour day, plus occaisional watch-standing. I hope this helps answer your question
