They are saying it is something very disappointing, or sometimes sad.
Ex: When I found out the event was sold out, I died a little inside.

They are saying it because they were let down, dissapointed to the degree that it felt like a little part of them died inside…They are sad….disheartened…

It is not funny at all. It is worse than sad. It is when something that means everything to you, such as your spouse, your child or your career, is taken away from you, and you feel a lesser person because of it.
