There is a time to remain silent and a time to tell the guy that he’s standing on your foot–if you don’t tell him, he might not be aware of it…and then he might step on your other foot! Americans should always try to be courteous when expressing their views, which is to say that views should be expressed courteously and RESPECTED even if you disagree with the views! If THIS is what is meant, then I would agree re. silence. The quote/ adage is, “Silence is golden.” There is also another quote not used as often, “Keep your mouth shut!”

It is all situational my dear. Silence gives us the time to process the information at hand without jumping to any conclusions, It gives us the opportunity to save face. Instant reactions can be very unstable and at times very hurtful to everyone at hand.

I do believe in instant impressions, and trusting your intuitions. It however is not necessary for everyone to know what your are thinking or feeling at any given time!

I heard the quote “silence is golden”… from my Grandparents when I was young. I now understand that they wanted me to think before I spoke up, and… they probably needed a little peace and quiet!!!

Silence lets you observe and reflect. It is an art I would like to be better at and to tell you the truth, I wish others were better at it too!

This from someone who is very up front and has a hard time practicing silence.

I don’t think it’s the most proper but the safest. Then no one can ever get angry at you; disagree nor debate. There are lots of times we should keep our mouth shut, but not always. Sometimes you just have to speak up to defend what you believe in. So should read, “Silence is the safest answer”.

I don’t agree with it entirely. Silence can be a very proper answer yet it can also be the most inappropriate one as well.

Consider the question, “Do you love me?”. Is silence golden at the moment?

On the other hand, “Do I look fat in this dress?”. Silence could save a relationship.

That’s my spin.

I think it’s grammatically incorrect.

“Silence is the proper answer” or “Silence is the prefered answer” makes more sense.

Silence is good depending on the situation. If your an a argument, sometimes its just better to shut up and walk away from it for the time being.

I like it I’ve always thought that silence says more than actual words.

The way its worded is not humourous or thought provoking, so it looks like something you’d hear from your average pedestrian. i think once you think about it, its a good quote, but at first glance, it seems average.

i think it means that, with silence, you can’t offend anyone and you can never be wrong…… so therefore, its most proper
