many areas of our technical world, internship is not only an expected time of ‘hands on’ learning, it is often mandatory. You cannot get to be a doctor, for example, without a period of internship, where you work on genuine cases under the watchful eye and guidance of real doctors. As you progress, the doctors will evaluate your ability to think ‘around’ obstacles and present possible methods for dealing with the issues faced in ofttimes brilliantly wonderful new ways. Of course, there are internships in industry as well, often called a period of apprenticeship, where you are actually working on the job with others who have been doing the same type of job for decades and can give you the benefit of their experience (or at least these are the ways they are supposed to work, but in the real world, sometimes, you stand out a little too much and the ones that are supposed to help you feel a little threatened by your presence and work to get rid of you).
While there are drawbacks to being an intern, you should give it all you’ve got, and hope for the best. Resumes are not the only place that this experience shows, it shows in your comfort level in performing the tasks that you have already done so many times before. Believe me, that comfort level was what gained me a promotion on my last job, way before I should have been considered for it.
Best of luck to you, and by all means, get that experience.

All internships are different, but the point of them is that you get on-the-job experience before going out into the workforce for real. I highly recommend you do one if you can before you graduate. Sometimes the company will offer you a real job after graduation, or at least you’ll have a good reference and some part of a network.

The education and knowledge in the field in which you’re per suing. It all depends on what field you want to advance in and get your foot in the door. Not only do you get the knowledge and education and experience (which is priceless) you also can apply that to your resume which will definitely open more doors for you….. 🙂
