you can psychoanalyze yourself and figure out why you’re majoring in such a useless field.

Volunteer as much as you can in whatever area you think you would like to practice. Try your local drug and alcohol clinics, disabled children’s homes (developmental homes), nursing homes, VA or charity hospitals, and the local mental health clinics. Also try AA, AL ANON, etc and ask if they need volunteers. If you want to specialize in children, ask to help out at the schools in a non psych capacity (teacher’s aide). Or at the nursing home as an activity coordinator if you think you want geriatrics. Until you get the MA/PhD you won’t find a “paying” job. If they know you previously as a good volunteer worker who is working on her higher degrees, they are more likely to hire you when you finish. These are also all good resume builders.

For the meantime, get your job now so you could apply what you’ve learned for your forthcoming MA or PhD. You see, its not all good for theories only. You can learn by actuality, I mean you can learn from your experience. So if you pursue your plan for MA or PhD, you are more equipped coz you have more knowledge now.

Take a receptionist or office job in a social work or psychologist’s office. If you want to continue a professional career in this field, it’s best to have experience in any way you can. Often graduate schools value that kind of experience, even if it’s just a receptionist.

Not much actually. Although one of my previous professors said that he worked as an orderly in a mental hospital. So you can look into that. Maybe even an orderly at a normal hospital on the psych floor.
