What are Science Lab Classes?

I am a senior and am looking at colleges still. I notice that a requirement is “Of Science, units that must be lab” and I was wondering what is that.

I have taken Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Forensic Science.

Lab classes, are basically science classes where you do laboritories. I would talk with an admissions counsoler for more information.

A science course can be a combination of lecture and laboratory work…for example, chemistry. The lecture portion consists of typical lessons, text readings, discussion with an instructor. Laboratory sessions give students hands on experience. So in chemistry you might perform experiments mixing different substances to observe characteristics of the oxidation process / rates of different materials to compare and contrast different materials to different oxidizing agents.

Some science classes do not require a lab, or the lab may be optional. For example, the school may require you to take 2 science courses, but only one must have a lab. So while labs are offered for chemistry and geology, you took the lab with your chemistry class, so you fulfill the requirement and do not have to take the lab with the geology class.

So, for the classes you took, simply count up the ones where you were in lab and see if you have enough units to meet the entrance requirement for the college of interest.

Hope this helps. Best wishes.

The lab classes will be associated with the lecture classes. Biology lecture will also have a lab class. It works this way for all science classes that have labs. In your high school, if your regular science classes do not have labs, take the AP classes if they do have labs.

as example, you might take a chemistry class that meets 3 times a week for lectures and then on another day you have perhaps a 4 hour lab period where you perform pre-determined experiments so you can see and better understand some of things discussed in the lectures.

for each experiment, you collect data and submit a report (possibly just one per group rather than from each student) summarizing what you did, and how and why your results agree or differ from theoretical expectations.

if you don’t get stuck in a group with a bunch of idiots, you probably only have to stay in the lab long enough to get your experiments done rather than the full assigned period, but as you surely know by now, each instructor sets his own class policies.

Talk with your high school science teacher to see which units count as lab and which count as classroom.

You go to the laboratory and make experiments, same time maybe give the quiz or test, that shows you understood how you have to make the experiment. talk to your counselor. Good luck!
