Start with the Virginia Department of Education. If they are not the right persons (because it is a private school), they can at least point you in the correct direction. Main line: 1-800-292-3820

Wait! Pls don’t over-react – could it just be a matter of misinterpreting the text?

As far as I know Coyote, Iktome, and the rock is a White River Sioux (not Fioux) Legend and the moral of the story being something about giving.

It’s a Native American legend and really – it’s a story to be told to children. I don’t know how it could be led to anything remotely sexual but it could be how they try to tell children about how not to give up something so precious away so easily?

Do check out with the school first, they could have come up with the seminar and touch on sexuality because there could have been an incident where a child has been inappropriately treated so *shrugs* in a really roundabout way teaching the kids not to give up themselves to others so easily etc.

Really – some things can get lost in translation. Since you guys pay premium fee to study in a private school, best you go down and get them to explain exactly what was going on.

Gd Luck!

Have you read it? Just because your mom thinks it’s “smut” doesn’t mean it is, let alone pornography. Before YOU make a judgment, you should read it so that, if you are involving yourself in this, you know exactly what it says. Speak to the teacher and then the principal first before you go to the Virginia Department of Education. Ask why this book was assigned and what the students are supposed to get out of it. Site specific examples of what you are referring to as “smut.” Don’t get combative or angry or you may be dismissed as just another nutty parent. The calmer you are and the move examples you have, the more seriously you will be taken.

As long as it is not on the schools banned book list I doubt that there is much you can do. My suggestion is to have you mother contact who ever is in charge of the school and go in to talk to them. The can answer any questions she may have and address her concerns. Another avenue would be to contact other parents in your sister’s class and see what they think. There is always power in numbers when confronting anything you want to change.

This is something for your mother to talk to the school about…first the teacher, the principal, the school director, depending on if each person solves the problem. There is no state-wide “smutty-homework-reporting hotline”.

Not sure what version you have. Is this different from the Native American version? There is nothing sexual in the Native American version.
