Shouldn’t schools do a better job of teaching students to speak properly?

I work as a tutor at a college and I have seen A LOT of adults who can’t or won’t speak properly. It’s not because they have speech problems, but because they weren’t taught from an early age to speak clearly and articulately. I can’t help but think that if schools focused on teaching children from K to 12 to speak properly, the children would be done a tremendous service.

Absolutely. Its not just k-12, either. I was watching an interview with the quarterback of a college football team over the weekend and the guy couldn’t even form a coherent sentence. How the heck did this guy make it into an Ivy League college?

Grammar and diction need to be taught aggressively in K-12. Unfortunately, more time is being spent on studying for “the test” than learning to properly and coherently express ideas.

Good lord, yes! Sorry if this seems like I’m tooting my superiority horn, but I find myself dumbing down my language on a regular basis with many different people, and my language to begin with is NOT professorial or inaccessible.

I think it’s good idea to have a tutor for K to 12 because it can help them to have a proper pronounciation and can help them when they having their oral exam.
