Oh no it’s a lie.
I didn’t think I had to do it, but today was my first day of school and my literature teacher was like “hope you did your reading because you’ll be tested on it next week”. I’m pretty much screwed.

I didn’t have to read in the summer… we just had to read a book every month and write an essay on it. I would suggest reading at least a few books; it will improve your chances of doing well on the AP in May. If your teacher gives you choices, I strongly suggest A Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger

Oh, no it’s not true, you always have to do a journal, or a Summer Reading Assignment.

Well… with most summer reading, one is usually tested on the material as soon as school beings. Therefore, it would be prudent to read the novels. In addition, you could at least say you’ve read the book.

well, if you have to do a book report, i would bet that you might want to read it. even if it’s not “required” there is probably a good reason why the teacher assigned it, and you may end up being tested on it early on, so i wouldn’t avoid it… it’s already getting late in the summer…
