Well, as a college instructor, I can usually tell by the language in the paper. Typically, students write in a certain voice and I can tell when they have plagiarized because it just doesn’t sound like a student’s writing. Usually, I take a sentence that I question and type it into google. 9 out of 10 times, the EXACT sentence will come up in a paper.

Also, there are new programs that allow professors to upload papers and it will search a database of papers to see if there are any matches.

I know how tempting it is to cheat and how frustrating it is to write a paper, but don’t do it. YOU WILL GET caught!

There are services that professors use that allow us to submit papers. The entire paper is returned to us with the parts that have been plagiarized highlighted by percent level. Its not always the entire essay or paper. Some students think they can get creative and take a paragraph from here and another from another source. So its not just papers that are purchased. Its okay to use sources but give others credit for their work!

One serivce is called Turnitin and the other I know of is called Mydropbox.

it depends if the quality of work was insanely good and the teacher just knows the person is not that capable of writing the essay. also there is this thing called turnitin.com and it’s a site i turn most of my papers into, it calculates what percentage of the paper came from the internet and where it came from, unsighted sources are then counted as plagerism. if your going to cheat do it right and smart or you will get caught. p.s. don’t buy papers online

Many times the professors get the same papers turned in year after year and recognize them. Also, many colleges have soft wear where they can upload samples from essays and see if they find a match.

Sometimes a simple google search will do the trick if the paper has been published somewhere else online.

They see several hundred essays/term papers every semester, whcih over the years means tens of thousands, they are much more well read thena the students and are well aware of what is out there online…plus it is very easy to pick out when suddenly a students writing style changes…you could flunk the class when I went to college and would be expelled at the service academies for instance.

There are several free services out there available to educators that compare essays against a database of ones available for sale online. Stanford used to have one; I don’t know if it still does, as I haven’t had to use it in a while.

I’ve caught several students over the years who plagiarized. It’s relatively easy to spot, because the quality and style are markedly different from what you’ve seen from that student before.

The teachers probably read already made essays right before assigning the prompt so when they read the student essays, they know what exactly to look for. My English teacher in high school also knew all the websites to get premade essays

My frined had a teach who knew a website where she typed in an essay that a student wrote and if any parts were copied and found on any websites it would pop up and she would know it was plagerized

Well, teachers know what a student is capable of, how they write, what language they use, etc. Odds are if something was plagiarized, the professor is probably very familiar with texts on the subject the essay was about.
