(1) Break the states down into groups (i.e. East, South, Mountain, etc)

(2) Then get a bunch of blank maps and before you start studying, fill in the ones you know. This will help you focus on which states you need to study.

(3) Just keep on reading and looking at the map and keep plugging them into the blank ones. As a tip, instead of doing the entire map, I would memorize each region at a time before moving onto the next.

So for example: Take a blank map and fill in all the West Coast states. Once you know that move onto the Mountain states, etc.

(4) When you finally feel comfortable with all the states, take a last couple blank maps, and fill them in about 2-3 times just for practice.

Good Luck!

I would list them alphabetically as a good way to memorize them. As to where they are on the map: try the link below–place each state where you THINK it goes, and the program will tell you CORRECT or give exact outline where it correctly goes. Good practice.

Many moons ago when the earth was young & me too: we had excellent luck with a wooden USA map puzzle. Not only did we learn where the states are & identify them by their shapes but also the capitol of each. When alone, put the puzzle together unside down; guess capitol, turn it over to check.

I see these puzzles are still in the toy/puzzle isle of stores.

First thing that came to mind was the Animaniacs–they had a couple songs about geography. This one has state capitals too, but maybe that will come in handy eventually 🙂

Old school!

Get pictures of maps, and look at the them and talk outloud to yourself. And then get some blank maps, and fill in the states without looking at anything. That should help =)

Learn them by region, learn the Eastern coastal states first for there are many, place them in alphabetical order, then slowly progress down the country to the Western coastal states….learning them in alphabetical order is great too, theres this great song i learned in my youth that placed them in all in order in song…wish ya heard it…good luck

There is actually a song but I think the map idea is better.
