Is University of Illinois at Chicago a good school for engineering?

If I get admitted to UIC’s school of engineering, will i get a great education and graduate with a secure and well-paying job? I’m also looking at Purdue, University of Illinois Urbana, MSU, and Ohio State.

Any accredited university will have a good school of engineering. The quality of the education in engineer depends far much more on the student than the program.

You cannot wait to cram for quizzes as you can at Liberal Arts schools. You cannot study just for the test and forget it as you can at Liberal Arts schools. Each class builds a knowledge base to use on the next one. There are NO throwaway classes in the engineering curriculum. You NEED the English classes in order to properly present your engineering work, whether it is a written or spoken report. It does no good to design the perfect solution to a problem if you cannot describe it and present it clearly. Some of the biggest disasters have been because the engineers could not effectively present the problems (the I35 bridge disaster is one – the engineers KNEW and TOLD people but they did not get the message across)

All of the schools you mention are excellent. One thing to know, after your first job, where you went to college is far less important than the quality of your engineering since graduation.

yes The UIC College of Engineering is recognized for its academic excellence with undergraduate and graduate programs in six academic departments: Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil and Materials Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. The College has 114 faculty, 1,624 undergraduate and 816 graduate students. Two of the College’s faculty are members of the National Academy of Engineering, 40 are Fellows of their professional societies, 20 are National Science Foundation CAREER or Presidential Young Investigator Award winners, and more than 10 are editors of major research journals. The research programs at the UIC College of Engineering have been growing rapidly over the years and are conducted in 6 departments and 7 interdisciplinary centers. The UIC College of Engineering is the top ranked public Engineering College in Chicago and we are proud that during 2005-2006, the total research expenditure for the College of Engineering was about $20 million.

It is a pretty respectable school for that, remember it is the University of Illinois. I had many friends who went their for engineering most notably for civil engineering. She now works in Washington D.C making about $95,000. Just wish the campus was a little nicer it looks kind of dungenee. Hope this helps.

Ok.. Lets take the middle part of the question. “Secure and well paying?”. No education can guarantee you that. Back in the day, yes, it would have. Security in the job market is probably the biggest myth. There really is no security. Ask the people who are getting laid off. As the “dot.commers” that are looking for work. Your job is only as secure as the company you work for. I think the question you need to ask is “Is this a good school for MY TYPE of engineering?” Some are better at mechanical, some Chemical. You need look it over and see. Remember, the bigger the university, the less likely you are to get “hands on” attention. Meaning, getting time with the professor to ask those questions. Smaller univerisities usually lend themselves to more contact. Also, look at the faculty. Where did they come from? Where did they get their degrees? Cover all the bases
