Is Text/ ‘Net ‘Shorthand’ the New English?

I just wanna know how many young people out there, (roughly teens to early 20s) actually end up spelling words like “you’re” as ‘ur’ or ‘yr’ when they’re at school or writing a paper for school. Another example: “cuz”= because.

Do you guys use “net shorthand” in those 2 circumstances more often or less?

Just mighty curious….& feeling uneasy about it.

I really hope not. It’s bad enough when someone posts a question written entirely in text speak.

I remember having to ask my 16 year old cousin what ‘lol’ meant – I thought it was an image of someone raising their arms in the air!

A lot of people are worried about it here in the UK. Exam markers have already reported that exam answers are full of text speak, and teachers say that it is ruining childrens spelling, because when asked to write words out in full, they have no idea how to spell them. And this is ages 12+.

I’m 29 and just wanted to say good question (i had no idea what a “bff” was until I saw it on an AT&T Wireless commercial)

IMO bff, which i learned was “best friend forever” sounds real stupid but since it’s from the kids, it’s expected. They’ll learn their so-called bf’s aren’t going to be “f’s”.

I hope this isn’t going to be common and I hope if kids text adults they use the actual spelling like i told my niece because i had no idea what the hell she was saying. (I don’t get how my becomes mah or ma)

i have a feeling it’s only going to become more and more commonplace.
