If your wife gives you lemons, make lemonaid!!!?

English is my second language. I hear this often. Where I come from lemons are expensive and housewives wouldn’t give them as a gift. What exactly does this mean and can I sub. for grapes or oranges in my own culture???

Well, in American culture, a “lemon” is something that is worthless or not ideal. It also is a fruit, yes. But what this means is, to do the best you can with the current situation. The phrase is called a “proverb.”

By no means is this proverb a reference to the fruit.

It’s actually “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.”

Which i would say means that use what you have to make something amazing (or in this case, something yummy). Lemons are quite expensive, but some people grow them in their gardens.

With some more research it will make more sense

Good luck

It actually goes If life gives you lemons make lemonade. It just means that you should make the best out of what you have.
