If that is too vague, you can work with the traditional “two hours per credit hour/unit per week” or, in other words, two hours of self-study for each hour of lecture. Be advised, however, that this rule is an average, and it will vary from course to course.

If you are looking at minimizing the time you need to spend studying, it will behoove you to learn to study as efficiently as possible. I recommend looking into the SQ3R method.

Oh, and as a side note, one thing I did throughout college was to have a buffer time between studying and exams. I watched many of my peers cram until the moment the exam was handed out. This causes unnecessary stress that will be detrimental to your performance on the exam. It is better to stop cramming 15 or so minutes prior to the exam, say to yourself, “I know what I know” and go walk around a bit, or go get a cup of coffee, or something. This will settle your mind a bit and you will be able to think more clearly during the exam
