How long until I’m fluent in French?

I’m studying French from scratch. I haven’t learnt any since school and I’ve long since forgotten what Oliver the Onion (that’s what he was called) from the Tricolore taught me.

Studying 2 hours per day every day how long until I can have a decent conversation in French without constantly asking someone where they live/how old they are and what their name is?

Could be anything from a year to a decade. If you can’t speak it with the natives in France, then you can expect that to hamper your progress – there is no practice better than with the native people.

Also it depends what you’re using to learn. You need to HEAR the language to speak it properly, so I expect that cassettes/CDs and the like will speed up your progress. THe look/cover/write technique is good for memorising… maybe talk to yourself in French every now and again. You will become fluent more quickly that way.

So, as I said earlier, it depends on your learning tools. Focus on sound and visual. I listed some sites below (after exploring them and such), they’ll almost certainly help.

Good luck!

It depends on whether or not you have a knack for languages. There are a million subtleties that go along with the lingo. You’ll never really stop learning, but you should be able to have a fairly good conversation with a native speaker in about a few years, again, depending on how well you pick up languages.

i went to spain for two weeks with my high school spanish and spoke it fluently. when you put yourself in a situation where no one is speaking english for you, you learn the usage. from scratch it may take you a few months. it’s not that hard to learn spanish, i don’t know about french. my aunt is from france and learned english in a few months and they say english is the hardest language. keep trying and you’ll get there. be persistent and try to interact with french (nice ones) people and that will improve yours!

You will be fluent in French within two years after you move there and speak it everyday. Then you can say, “I have been there and done that”
