A Bassoon reed looks like two thin pieces of shaped wood tied together with string and wire. Blowing through it makes the two pieces vibrate together. This makes the sound. The vibrating air then goes through the bocal (the bent metal piece) and into the instrument and depending on the combination of fingerings, the pitch is made as the air column is broken up by open finger holes. That’s not very much information for a paper. Do you need any other information?

The bassoon is a double reed. This means the player blows into a mouthpiece with the reeds attached and the sound is created by the air passing through the reeds and down the instrument itself. The player must have chops of steel, which the French call “embochure.”

My wife plays woodwinds. She says I should mention that the main difference between the bassoon and the oboe is that the bassoon burns longer.
