How do you motivate yourself to study in college?

First, set up a study routine that you’re going to follow, like a certain ritual that surrounds studying. Break it into small portions (e.g. walking to your desk, then taking out your notebook and book, then reading a few pages, then taking a note on what you read, and so on).
Now, what you want to do is increase the frequency of each of those behaviors that make up “studying”, right? So, rather than just sitting down and studying, figure out a way to reward yourself each step of the way.
Do you love chocolate? Ritz crackers? A certain musician? Even just smiling and telling yourself you did a good job can work, oddly enough! After you accomplish each step in your studying “ritual”, give yourself a small dose of whatever your reinforcer is – a Hershey’s kiss, a cracker, a Metallica song, an “atta boy!” – and continue to the next step. Each time you accomplish a step, you get a prize. Start small and reward yourself maybe for each note you take from the book, or each question you get right when you study. Soon, you’ll find that you won’t need to reward yourself constantly to keep up the good work, and you can drop to giving yourself a prize for every few steps, or a big prize at the end.
Use a variety of reinforcers (prizes) to keep yourself from getting bored. If you don’t want to eat when you’re studying, grab a bunch of small change (pennies, dimes, nickels) and a jar. Every time you do something right in your studying, put a coin in the jar. Each one represents a prize you can get later (maybe an M&M, or the number of minutes you’ll set aside to play x-box or read for fun).
If you mess up when you study, don’t guilt trip yourself or get mad…just try again. Reward the good, ignore the bad.
I find it ridiculously depressing not to be able to succeed at something only because it’s not interesting enough… especially if it keeps from getting what I want!!
Just think “If i get past this subject, that’s one last thing off my list”
