Go to the post office. There is a charge. It is used by businesses that do not have an office and don’t want customers coming to their homes. It is used by people who are constantly moving. It is use by people who have something to hide from the rest of the family.

You can either apply for one at any post office or you could also obtain one from various independently owned businesses that act as a post office with other benefits, e.g., boxing, packaging, copying, delivery options to fit your budget or expediting (UPS, FedEx, ‘snail mail’), various gift items, laminating, etc.

If you are starting up a new home-based business, it is always more professional utilizing a P.O. Box instead of your actual street address (especially if you live in an apartment). It is also safer without having worries of strangers just showing up on your doorstep.

An application and a monthly fee would be charged. I also recommend obtaining two keys–hide one and have a separate key ring from all other keys. I suggest you call around for the best price and location.

To obtain a PO Box you can either go through the United States Postal Service, or you can go through a privite company like Mail Boxes Etc. The boxes come in different sizes and get more expensive the bigger they get. Privite PO box dealers are usually more expensive than USPS ($15 compared to something like $60 per six months) but they will allow deliveries from UPS, DHL, FedEX, etc.

You need to show them proof that you live in the city (like a lease or a state ID) and fill out a form that they give you.

An advantage is that your mail is more secure. You can check it 24 hours. You dont have to check it every day, but it will still be organized, not spilling out of your box.

The reason I looked into it was because I was living at an address temporarily and didnt want my mail to continue going to the house after I left.

They are a good idea if you need them. Call around and make sure they are available because some places are full and require you to get on a waiting list.

You rent a post office box at the post office.

That box number will be your post office mailing address, along with the city, state and zip code of that post office.

Benefits include no one but you (or anyone to whom you give your key) can get into your mail.

Detractions (negatives) are that you cannot just stroll to your mailbox to get your mail, unless you live close to your post office. For most of us, the post office is a least several minutes’ drive, which brings up not only inconvenience and the cost of gas, but the emissions and other environmental issues.

Mailman is driving by your place anyway, it’s better to just have your mail delivered to your home.

You need to purchase a box at the post office at a monthly fee. I used to have one and it was good for me because I lived with roommates who were pretty nosy.

Go talk to your local postmaster at the post office.

It more secure than your house mailbox where people can steal your mail and ID.
