How do I have a family and go to Med School?

I’m only 13 but I’m looking into my future. I want to get married and have at least four kids. I want to be a Pediatrician or a doc in the NICU. But would that take up to much time, should I just be an RN or could I pull off being a doctor?

Dear lilaggie94,

You are young and thinking about your future, which is great! I love that someone like you is mature enough and thinking of her future. I was like you, young and knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life, to become a doctor. Now, I find myself on the track, trying to become one. It is something I want and will not let anything stop me from becoming one. It something I have wanted for so long and won’t let anything keep me from it.

Actually, my sister is 13 also and is thinking of being a doctor too. I will give you the same advice I give to her.

Being a doctor requires a lot of commitment and dedication to helping people. If it is something you REALLY want to do, don’t let ANYONE stop you from pursuing your dreams. Lets say you finish when you are 26 (meaning you finish in 8 years which most people do) you are still young enough to get married and have kids. You need to first establish a foundation for yourself and be independent before you start a family. A family requires a lot of hard work too and you must be able to support them…so if you want to become a doctor go to school, study hard, and everything will fall into place later on. Maybe you might find your husband while at school (which many people do) and you both will get married when you are ready. But, please, get your MD before you get married and start having kids. Actually you CAN get married, but having kids will distract you and take too much of the attention you need to give to your school work.

Many people these days get married later (25+) because they are trying to pursue their careers. You will not be the only one. Work hard and you will be rewarded. It will be all worthwhile in the end, trust me. Do what you love and forget about what others tell you. If it is what you want, do it. Don’t let ANYONE discourage! Don’t worry about your future. You never know what will happen. Live life in the present. Take care and good luck. Anymore questions, please feel free to ask.

God bless!

If you go to college right after high school, that is four years of under grad work, then Medical school another 4 years, You will be a doctor at 26 years of age. You will need to do your residency for 3 years to get paid a lot of money. I suggest to finish school then have children by the age of 30-35, That way you will have money for your children.

Honey it’s very nice to think about your future , and plan it all by now, but you know medicine is 5yrs and if you want to specialize , you will take another 5-6 yrs or maybe more…

so that obviously means , study first and then plan out your family.

I have this problem too…but what to do , career is important, but maybe I will first do 5yrs then start my family and then do the rest or maybe I will finish all the yrs and then start my family…by then I might most probably be 27.

Now I’m going to do my A’levels.

BYE!

Good choice,becomeing a doctor.

It’s hard to study medicine.I know a person who’s in med school and has a 300+ page book to learn by the end of August.Pretty tough eh?…I suggest you take on a more easy job.Like a cook like me.The thing is that at your age you can easily change yor mind. When I was your age I wanted to become a vet,and now I’m a freakin chef.

I suggest you live your dream as it is your life, but my advice:You FREAKIN CANT :((

I applaud you for thinking about your future, If medical school is the way you want to go. GO FOR IT.

But also I would recommend finishing school before having kids.

It works out better that way. trust me
