How do I go about making some change in the public school system?

What happened to literature In New York City public schools!?

I just transfered from being in private school all of my life, to a public school. I have no problem with this (hah, I’m no snob) but the teacher said to me that the governor has implemented so much standardized testing that there is no time for literature. What gives? In my old school, we read great pieces of literature like The Great Gatsby, A Raisin In The Sun, Cat On a Hot Tin Roof, The Scarlet Letter and things along that level…and to think there will be none of it now? Its baffling.

I really, really want to change this, how do I go about doing it? I really don’t think I need to go over what ‘irony’ is for the fifth time

You need to lobby your governor or state’s representative for a better change. Note, I said lobby (give legal bribes) not vote nor call. Voting does not work any more. However you could try writing a letter to a politician known to complain about how things in our education system took a down fall or write to your local newspaper. It may work or may get featured. You never know.

The problem is our politicians want results that can be measured to show off to the voters. The problem with your private school education is the results cannot be measured through reading such literature. Results can be only measured in tests, so schools with the higher tests scores can apply for better funding because such “results” prove the school is doing its job, when really the teachers are merely telling the answers to the standardized tests in the classroom and not learning the reasons or methods to arrived at such answers which is the entire point of going to school. When more of these schools get better results, a politician can point at such results and say they made the school system better when in reality it did not.

What can you do to change it? Well you could organize a student committee, but since most students in public schools tend to care less about school, that is pretty much like trying to push a rope. It ain’t going to work. Have you talked to your teachers about it for advice? Many have been in the system for some time and you may come across a few who feel the same way about how the system took a downward spiral. Maybe organize them? May or may not work.

Your best bet? It is to buckle down and study your buns off and see how quickly you can get out of high school before you turn 18 and go to college and earn a real education. I did it when I was young and a year before everyone else by adding as many credits to my curriculum as much as possible. You can do it possibly too. Don’t worry about any one else, can’t change it now.

You will be lucky to change that! Those books are way above the normal school kids reading level! But you can try to send letters to the Governor but I doubt it will do a lot. You can also try to look up what kinda petitions you can use to your advantage and how many signatures you will need to get it even started! I am glad to see someone trying to get the reading programs started up in the schools!
