It goes back to what type of email you’re up with. If you’re using a client like Thunderbird or Outlook for POP3 or IMAP for example , you can get this configured under Options > Email alert settings. Say if you’re on a web based, you may get notified via the messengers like Yahoo or MSN for respective email accounts. These may also be configured under the Option menu on the messengers.

If you are using Yahoo email account then you need to Install firefox browser first :http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
Later download this tiny ‘add on’ called ‘yahoo mail notifier’ from firefox website:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1264
After doing so you get the pop up & alert as soon as you get new email. The best part is you can adjust time to auto- check an email from 1 minute to 10 minutes or may be more. It keeps repeating pop up & sound alert. Very convenient.
You can download firefox even if you have internet explorer, they work together. No need to uninstall explorer.
