you can buy English books or check them out from the Library, you can hire a tutor. you can take online classes. and yes, Practice a lot! read lots of books that use bigger words and spelling… I had a friend who wanted to do the same thing, He bought lots of big books and a dictionary and looked up all the words lol. Good Luck!

Be sure to buy yourself a good dictionary and don’t be afraid to use it. When you get one, look up “grammar”; it isn’t “grammer”.

Read well-written books and articles by award-winning authors. Pulitzer Prize winners are a good place to start.

Read aloud (not just silently) so you hear the proper grammar. You will learn to identify poor grammar when you hear the errors others make. Listen to newscasts on radio and TV; there are fewer errors made by broadcasters than you will hear in the general population. DO NOT go by what you hear on MTV or VH1, as they butcher English almost beyond recognition.

Find a good book on English usage AND a grammar book. If you have a junior college in your town, look for these books in the bookstore on campus. Such books will help you know the differences between, “too, to, and two”, “whether vs. weather”, and “there, they’re, and their”, for example. Pay special attention to correct pronoun usage; it is NOT, “Me and my friend went to the store”!

I learned how to write and improved my grammar through reading a wide variety of books from novels to short stories to biographies. By doing this your vocabulary will improve as will your general understanding of how words are used, and phrases are formed. It becomes ingrained in you at some point. With regard to actually converting that vocabulary into your own writing, it really helps to have a great teacher. During my first year in college, I took a paper to an English professor and he explained what was positive and what needed improvement in my papers, and with that, I was able to produce strong written material in future papers.

Good luck. I hope your endeavors yield success.

Read! Try some classics – E. Hemingway, Jack London, Steinbeck. I also keep a high school grammar book anddictionary on my desk to look up rules when I’m unsure of something.
