I have been asked to either Defend or Challenge the statement below, does anyone have any ideas or thoughts that could prove useful or that I could use.

I believe I could “defend” the second half of the statement better than the first. Do you know any people who have been through something similar? Use news events, if necessary.

How to support the second half of the statement, “….The more frequently firms change, the greater the likelihood of failing”: Think of the different kinds of change (ie: personalities, personnel, workloads, the actual structure, internal and external, newly implemented ideas). Now, form all of these into at least 3-4 paragraphs. Whola! Time yourself, if it’s a speech, and try to make it no longer than 7 minutes. If it’s a theme, if you go with the format suggested, you should get an A+.

Sure. I’d pick firms that changed and thrived, firms that failed to change and died, and then some counterexamples. For example, Apple dropped the “computer” from their name and thrived as a maker of music playing devices. General Motors insists on doing the same old thing and is in danger of going under. But there are plenty of examples of firms that diversified or went in a new direction, lost their way and failed. Change must be strategic, carefully planned and implemented, and not done just for the sake of change.
