My Name Doesn’t Fit Here

Help me with multitasking?

In my AP biology class I’m taking this year, we must fill out blanks on a notes handout of what’s on a PowerPoint and what the teacher is saying.

Our teacher goes very quickly, and even when we ask her to slow down and not talk while we’re reading the PowerPoint, she still does it, and it’s really confusing and I can’t keep it straight and some of the older students (I’m freshman) seem to be doing ok but I feel like I’m collapsing.

How do you multi-task watching and taking notes on the PowerPoint AND taking notes on what the teacher said when we’re going, like, mach 1?

You just keep going to your teacher’s office hours and asking her to re-explain what you missed until she finally gets it through her thick head that she’s there to teach, not speed read, and that if she’s not clear the first time she’ll have to repeat herself later. Also, try to look over your course materials ahead of time, so its not all new when you are in class.

Generally, I found in the sciences and engineering that many instructors do this, like its some kind of hazing . . they want you to know that they are scientists and engineers first, teaching is only their distant second priority. Even had one guy who would write on the board with his right hand, while erasing what he wrote with his left hand. His other cute trick was to tell you to hold questions until the end of class, then he’d (I think purposely) run over time so no one could ask him anything before he darted out of the classroom – jerk!

Can you take a tape recorder to class? I think that would solve the problem. 🙂
