Grammar question: is vs. are??

For my homework I have to decide whether to use is or are here: “There is an astonishing number of conclusions a person can deduce based solely upon one’s language”

is it is or are? At first I thought it was is, because “an astonishing number” is singular. But what if the verb describes “conclusions”? Then it would be are. Help, please and thank you!

Because conclusions is in a prepositional phrase(of conclusisons), it cannot be looked at as the subject of the sentence. Words in a prep. phrase can never and will never serves as the subject. Ignore the above poster. Therefore, it cannot be looked at as a determiner to use a singular or plural verb. The subject of the sentence is number. Number is a plural subject, and it deserves a plural verb. Thus, ARE should be used as the verb.

“There ARE an astonishing number of conclusions…”

If you take out “an astonishing number of”, the sentence should still be gramatically correct, therefore it should be ARE. Conclusions is plural, so it’s ARE.

“an astonishing number of” acts as an adjective in this sentence. It may be clearer if you replace that phrase with any adjective:

Ex. There are many conclusions…

Ex. There are several conclusions…

The subject is conclusions and the verb is the verb to be. Since the subject is 3rd person plural, the verb will be “are”. Hope this is helpful!

So I checked back in on this question, and am amazed that there is still a debate. A simple solution? Type the sentence into Word and check grammar. It will replace “is” with ARE!!!

Im not the best at grammar, but based off what I know you need to use are. Just scramble the sentence, There is a number of conclusions doesn’t make sense, there are a number does.

“is” is the right one. “There is an astonishing number of conclusions a person can deduce based solely upon one’s language”

There ARE an astonishing number….sounds better to me.

Yes- “are” is the correct choice. It wouldn’t make sense to say “There is a number of conclusions.” See what I mean?

“is” because the subject is not conclusions and it isn’t plural. The subject is number

you use ‘is’ when describing something sigular….eg, “the pencil is yellow”

you use ‘are’ if you are describing multiple objects…eg “the pencils are yellow”

you also use ‘is’ and ‘are’ when conjugating the verb ‘to be’:

first person is “i am tall”

second person is “you are tall”

and third person is “he/she is tall”

you also use ‘are’ in the plural:

first person plural “we are tall”

second person plural “you are tall”

third person plural “they are tall”

hope that helps

(ps the answer to your homework is ‘is’ because there is only 1 astonishing number, not multiple astonishing numbers)

There are….

As it’s linked to the plural form of conclusions.

Interesting one…I would say “are” because “number” is conceptually plural.
