at the end of the school year my gpa was 3.49 but i took summer school and recieved an A in a class so what is my gpa now

GPA is total points divided by number of credits / courses. To figure GPA, we would need to know how many credits / courses you have now completed.
Now you tell us that this is your 8th credit. So, prior to this you had 7 credits at 3.49. This means your total points were 24.43. Are you sure?
Assuming this is correct, now you add your 4 points for your A and your total points is 28.83 divided by 8 credits.
Your new GPA would be 3.60.
