I would not diffame standard lessons and classes so light-

heartedly – I’ve been never bothered with yellow pencils, i.e.

Actually I learned Italian from a book “Italian in 30 days”

sounds very optimistic, admittably, but the concept of that

series (was in the 70s) appeared sound. Guiding through

common topics it snugged nicely to real experiences, like

‘coming to a new town’ – ‘orientation in airports etc” – “at

the grocery” and so on – slowly expanding the vocabulary.

It depends on your talent how you’d be able to cope with

similar systems, nowadays they come with video and audio

support, making it much easier to learn by doing & copying.

Also, the type of relationship between languages makes

a difference, for me as German, Scandinavian grammar

seems familiar instantly, while my Latinum didn’t help me

much with SPOKEN French, although it is Romanic lingo 🙂

The only way to truly pick up the nuances of a language is to immerse yourself in the country and culture. Books and classes will only get you so far. Rarely will you need the phrase “My pencil is yellow” on the street – but that’s what you end up learning in a “class”.

p.s. I can read, write and speak 4 languages fluently, and a smattering of 3 others.

Make friends with someone of that language that you want to study, take the course at a local school or travel to that country and stay there for a few months.

the best way to learn another language is to go and work in that country for a few years. If you cannot afford that then get yourself a few friends from that country on the internet. Download skype and look for users from your country of choice who will exchange lessons with you.
