Educated Minority?

Many years ago, I heard the phrase “trying to be white.” The statement is not made by white people but by minorities.

For example, I am a high school math tutor part-time. My hispanic friends cannot understand why a LATINO would be interested in geometry, trigonometry, calculus and algebra.

They think I am “trying to be white.”

What the heck is this all about? Since when does reading books and tutoring and seeking to further my education going to change my skin color?

I read and provide math tutoring because education fascinates me. I am NOT trying to be white, green or yellow.

thats the type of attitude that keeps people in the dark ages. im sorry that your friends are trying to keep you back by thinking that your interest in education and knowledge has anything to do with culture or race but i say congratulations on sticking with it. remember “scientia est libertas”

knowledge is power. and you have the power!

The only way to fend off criticism is to do nothing. Those who do things inevitably stir up criticism.

A defense mechanism used by those friends who fear that you will leave them behind.

Use creative ways to interest your friends in math. Apply it for them to something they use everyday.

Stay focused and keep polishing your skills.
