Theoretically NO. All you need is someone willing to hire you. The problem is in getting someone to hire a person with absolutely no assurance that person is worth a damn.
In reality you need to possess something that would indicate your ability to do what the boss needs done. If the boss is willing to train an apprentice that’s great. But, the boss will still want some assurance that who ever s/he hires is capable of learning. Now I ask you, what would better demonstrate your ability to learn than some certification (diploma, GED, college degree, trade school certificate) you could show a prospective employer?
So the best answer to your question is yes, you need something to indicate you can do the job.

it depends..but getting at least high school diploma is the best decision. they also look at your work experience, but I recommend you getting your diploma, even a community college or an associate’s degree will get you more money.
