Do freshman and sophomore(high school) years count when applying for colleges?

In freshman year I failed 1 class for the year with 1 failing grade and 1 70 and a 79 on the final(half year course) so I had to take it again in 10th grade. I also had one failing grade in another class with one c and passed for the year (another half year course) the rest were mostly c’s. But in sophomore year, I had all A’s on marking periods and finals. So would the freshman year affect me badly? I really wanna get into med school so I’m just wondering how this will affect me.

The short answer is yes. If this becomes a habit, it will definitely adversely affect you chances of getting into a good school. However, there is a way to turn this into a positive. If you work really hard and increase your grades and test scores over your next two years in high school, the college will see that you put forth an effort and you applied yourself, and the biggest thing of all is that you IMPROVED yourself. This shows that you have ambition, and are willing to work in order to get better, which is what college is all about. This is really hard to measure in people who get straight A+’s, because although they have a high score all the time, it’s static, and the college doesn’t know if the classes are too easy and they’re just coasting along with no ambition, or they’re just working really really hard. Try and start getting straight A’s in all your classes, be sure to make up for the ones you’ve missed.

On the other hand, some colleges do drop your freshman year because it is typically your hardest year because of all the adjustments to be made. Also, if there was a good reason for the failing grade (a family disaster) that affected you so much at a very critical time, and you can explain this, they may balance you transcript accordingly (although I should note that this is extremely rare). In any case, what it really depends on is what habits you develop and how you perform from now until you get your diploma. Good luck!

Most schools do look at freshman year, although there are some which do not. The Ivies do. If you had nothing but A’s all the way through school and one C, you might still have had a chance. Two becomes very unlikely. The problem is that you say you are a sophomore and you had A/B’s. That means that in addition to the Cs, you also B’s, and that, frankly, would eliminate you from any consideration at a place like Columbia. I’m sorry, but with anything less than a 3.85 unweighted GPA, you just won’t be looked at there. I’m afraid you need to start looking at some schools which are a little more realistic for you, since Columbia is an Ivy League school, and only takes some of the very best students in the world. Improvement will certainly open up your options, but not to places like that (I don’t mean to insult you; 99.9% of students would not be accepted at Columbia). Maybe if you continue to do really well through college, Columbia would be an option for you for grad school. As to your English class, you currently have a low B or a B-, depending on where within the range your grades fall. If you were to get a C on the final, it would probably ensure that you would get a B-. I would guess the same if you got a D, although it is possible that it could go as low as a C+. Your final grade could not be a D under the grading scheme you are telling us about..

Colleges will look at all your grades in high school from Freshman to Senior year. Grades along with test scores on the SAT/ACT, essays, extracurricular activities will all count towards whether you get into a college/university. You don’t apply to med school until after you finish your undergraduate degree. So med school won’t care about your freshman grades in high school but they will care about your GPA in college. Hope this helps.

all four years of high school count. colleges are going to see your grades from freshman to senior year.

the two most important years are sophomore and junior year. they pretty much expect you to do good freshman.

so yeah if ur trying to get into med school you are going to need to pull everything up and put tons more effort in. getting into med school is nothing easy.

all i can say is pull it together and put some effort into atleast getting a 3.6 or better in each class.

try to do the best you can.

put in some effort and you will get into a med school.

Yes, your overall GPA counts. However, if you show them that you have a lot of extracurricular activities plus a good SAT score, that can help your evaluation.

You will need high grades and MCAT scores to get into med school. Med schools will not look at your high school grades.

Senior year counts the most. All the other grades go in decreasing order of importance. I knew I was screwed and had no chance of going to college because of my highschool grades and lack of extracurrucular activities, so I joined the military. It worked out great and I eventually did make it to college and graduated with honours.

freshmen and sopmore year don’t count nearly as much as junior and senior year.. but they still count

and as far as med school – your high school performance doesnt affect that as it is a graduate program. your COLLEGE performance affects whether or not you can make it in med school
