Read constantly, and NOT just novels. Read biographies, non-fiction, newspapers, and fiction…anything you can get your hands on and your vocabulary will improve. Reading only novels will limit you somewhat.

Read novels! There simply is no better way to do it. And you need a plan. Check out 10 novels from the public library, plop them next to your bed, and read for 2 hours a night during the summer, and 1 hour a night during the school year.

Memorizing lists? Forget it. You need to learn these words in context.

I know some people look up words in the dictionary and write them down with their definitions when they come across them in their reading, and then study the list. Some wrote on a sheet of paper, others wrote it next to the paragraph in the book, and I guess re-read the novel. Either way, it might be a good plan seeing as how you are intent on building a vocab quickly. I never bothered. Sooner or later I would see the word again in another novel, and Icould sort of figure out the meaning over time.

A good choice would be read a series. Doesn’t matter if it’s Sci-Fi Novels or Artemis Fowl. Each book probably has at least 5 words you’ve never heard of before

Play word games like Text Twist and every time you get a word that you dont know look it up in the dictionary. A lot of times news papers will have a “word of the day” where it gives the word and the definition.
