Writing about Heros?

I am going to write about my brother, who is an injured marine from iraq and I needed some tips on writing about heros.

The story has to show emotion but I am not sure how to say it in words and so I was wondering if you can give me any tips.

Thanks

The biggest thing when you’re writing something emotional is to show, not tell the emotion

For example, say you were sad when you found out your brother was injured

Instead of saying, “I was so sad and worried” DESCRIBE the emotion. “My palms were sweating and I felt nauceus when I found out the news. Tears began to swell in my eyes and I felt a lump catch in my throat. I sobbed, how could this have happened?” The second one is more emotional because everyone has cried before about something terrible and worrisome so they know how it might feel. The description reminds the reader of their own emotions, so its much more effective

Good luck to you and your brother!
