1 – out, because it tells how and where she walked

2 – yesterday, because it tells when they sat

3 – quietly, because it tells how they must travel

4 – carefully, because it tells how the kittens must be handled

Generally adverbs are the toughest part of speech to get a handle on. One good rule of thumb I’ve found: if you are looking a word and you can’t figure out what part of speech it is, it’s probably an adverb. E.g. the word “please.”

Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives or other adverbs. Adverbs may also modify verbals, infinitives, participles, or even whole clauses.

in 1) she is a noun walked is verb so out is the adverb

2) in yesterday modifies sat so it is the adverb

3) quietly modifies the verb travel so it is the adverb

4) carefully modifies the verb Handle.

Adverbs usually answer the questions Who When Where What and How.
