write an equation to solve each problem.?

1) Two buses leave Houston at the same time and travel in opposite directions. One bus averages 55mi/h and the other bus averages 45mi/h. When will they be 400 mi apart?

2) The sides of a reactangle are in the ratio 3:2. What is the length of each side if the perimeter of the rectangle is 55cm?

1) Remember:

Distance travelled, d, = average speed, s, xly by time, t, so,

d = s*t, and

d/s = t, and

d/t = s.

Now, the average speed of the buses is 45+55=100m.p.h,

and d = 400, so,

t = d/s, so,

t = 400/100, so,

t = 4 hours.

So the buses will be 400 miles apart after 4 hours.

2) If the sides are in the ratio 3:2, then let the sides be 3x, 3x,

2x, and 2x cm long. since the perimeter of the rectangle is

55cm, then

3x+3x+2x+2x = 55, so,

10x = 55, so,

x = 5.5cm, and the sides of the rectangle will be

3 xly 5.5 = 16.5cm, and

2 xly 5.5 = 11cm. Hope this helps, Twiggy.
