I need to pick a topic for an persuasive essay that reflects a problem in school, youth, our national policy or society.

Not sure how controversial you want to be but you could look at the issue of self harm or self injury in young people. If you take the topic very broadly it looks at things like tattoos and body piercings – while at the other extreme it can include cutting with objects and knives, or branding with heated objects.
According to research I have been doing lately there is an increase in the number of young people in school and college who are cutting themselves or exhibiting other forms of self injury. It is not the nicest topic, but the chances are that someone you know is a “cutter” or injures themself in some other way.
One of the main elements of the essay could be what can be done to help young people who self harm, making people more aware of the “danger signs” and things like that.

Bullies, political bias brainwashing by teachers and how they need to be monitored, the need for children to be able to have their cell phones on them at all times for emergencies, just turned off.. etc.

i did a speech on fast food and how we should lower the amount of chains and such and my teacher really liked the speech and topic. so it could be a good one.
