History repeats itself over and over again. Many of the lessons learned in his plays still play an important role in modern day life.

Throughout the history of all educational systems, certain criteria has been set that most teachers fit into their curriculums. Most, if not all, English teachers will have a couple of Shakespeare pieces somewhere in their outline for the year, 9th-12 grade.

Why they do this is because it educates you. It helps to teach you of the great arts, as well as broadens your mind. Even if you wouldn’t admit it, there are a lot of different things that learning Shakespeare can teach you. Such as various writing styles, certain vocabulary, how people lived in his times, etc. It’s not just learning about the characters and the actual writing, but learning about history and learning how to interpret written works.

Just to let you know, I don’t like Shakespeare. I did not like reading his stuff in high school, and I’ll stay away from it unless forced to read it. :p With that said, I still think it’s a good learning experience. Especially since he wrote so much, and is regarded as a very skilled writer/play-wright.

All in all, just try to make the best of it. Like I said, I never liked much of anything I learned about, but you can find value in most of the stuff you learn about.

Shakespeare is relevant today in the same way that Mozart and Beethoven are relevant – they articulate the universal human condition. Themes such as jealousy, the corruption of power, love, and unrequited love will always remain a part of being human – and Shakespeare captures all of these themes in his body of work.

It’s important to continue producing these works, because his plays teach so much, they teach us: history, mythology, the Elizabethan world view, the roles of men and women during that time as well as a variety other things.
