Mostly it’s because less developed countries have large families, because lack of education and money means they don’t have contraception. Also, the role of women in these countries is a big factor – most women don’t have jobs like in the western world, so they’re more likely to have children earlier in life, and have more children. And, of course, it’s the culture in these countries to have a lot of children. These are the main causes of population growth; developed countries are actually likely to have a shrinking population in the future, it’s mostly LEDCs causing the growth.

We describe the growth of the human population as “exponential growth”. To give you an idea, imagine a single bacterium multiplying in number. This is the picture. A single bacterium becomes two. The two bacteria become four. The four bacteria become eight, the eight become 16…and so on and so forth. Meaning, the bigger the number of people reproducing, the faster will be the growth of the population.

Thomas Malthus wrote an essay many years ago about population in which his theme was that we were doomed to starvation since he believed that the food supply increased arithmetically and the population increase geometrically.

Fortunately, he is wrong at least up to this point. We have managed by disease and mass murders such as wars to reduce the growth of population.

The population, however is getting bigger due to our advances in medicine, the high birthrate in certain areas due to a lack of family planning and various religious groups beliefs that that having many children is Gods will.

Basically it is very simple. People all round the world are living longer because they are healthier than ever before.

More children are surviving infancy and going on to adulthood and parenthood. More older people are leading active self-sufficient lives for longer.

More women are having children later in life, and more mothers survive childbirth, and the aftermath, than ever before.

Our doctors and scientists have got the main killer diseases under control, and our ability to grow, store and distribute more food, means that less people die of malnutrition and starvation.

This all adds up to an improving chance of survival for every human alive today and an accelerating growth in the world population.

Because of poverty. Poverty results to lack of children without education and people without jobs. A number of people without jobs don’t do anything but sex. (Based on the statistics and studies here in our country). It’s proven.
