Understanding the mean and standard deviation is the basis for statistics.
Statistics gives you the ability to collect, analyze and interpret data to make more effective decisions.
I agree that crunching numbers is a drag, but it ultimately gives you a different perspective on how decisions, (especially in business and science) are made and how they affect you.
Don’t look at it as “busy work”, but as an opportunity to see things in a different light.
