without vitamin C you get scurvy – much feared by 16-18th centuries sailing ship captains . the first person to recognize the importance of vitamin C was Captain James Cook who ordered his crew to eat/drink lime juice daily to overcome the disease – hence the English being nicknamed “Limey’s”
and pirates referring to others as ‘scurvy dogs’
