Who was Pausanias?

In relation to the Persian wars (481BC -479BC ) I am confused as to who is Pausanias? As far as I know, a spartan king is also a spartan general, yet I continuously come across separations of two different Pausanias, one the general, and one the King – offering different biographies. I have to write an essay on “the role and contribution of Pausanias in the Persian Wars” Which one is the correct one? or are they the same person?!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/pausan… (only the king and the general are of significance, the others don’t matter)

Can anyone help explain this to me? thankyou =)

I’m fairly sure it’s the Pausanias that was a general. He was the nephew of the King of Sparta, Leonidas. The other Pausanius, the King of Sparta, lived at a different time and, although he travelled to Persia, he did not fight in the war.

‘He was responsible for the Greek victory over Mardonius and the Persians at the Battle of Plataea in 479 BC, and was the leader of the Hellenic League created to resist Persian aggression during the Greco-Persian Wars’.
