Which science fair project is better?

I am deciding between these two (and I am in 8th grade)

1. Which liquid keeps your pulse lower while doing vigourous excercising: Gatorade, Water or Powerade?

2. Does cleaning detergent help plants grow or does it decrease their growth rate?

I need the more age appropriate one and if you have any ideas they would be appreciated!

How much time do you have?

The first would be easier to set up if you can get a dozen or more volunteers to help. You must set up your theory and show how you monitored the experiments.

The second will take at least one week to start seeds and establish sufficient plant growth to measure. Also to do a good study you will need a lot of plants. And you will be measuring very minute quantities of detergent or you will kill all the plants.

If done well I think you will learn more and do better with the first.

There are too many variables in the exercise one and you’d likely have inaccurate results due to those variables. Tests on people are difficult because there are alot of things that you cannot control or keep constant.

Plants is pretty basic. It’s perfect. You can control all your variables and only manipulate the plant food. Keep your project simple…so you can explain the results properly.

I’d say experiment #2 because you can have a more controlled experiment and not get sporadic results.

Experiment #1 has way too many variables to consider.

I would go with # 1, as I know that cleaning detergent kills plants. That is probably already been proven.

I think the second one would be much easier to work with and easier to draw conclusions. The factors that need to be controlled for the first one are rather complicated.

Number 2.

I wouldn’t start messing with having to get informed consent to do research on human beings.

in case you have time, flow a petition around your college to prohibit using “Dihydrogen Monoxide” hint: look up the term, and you will hit upon a great style of helping suggestions approximately how risky, yet common this substance is.

the second one seems easy unless you in a hurry and not enough time to finish one time i did a simple one like making an egg go through a bottle.
