The geographical height of the Byzanpire empire occurred under Justinian around 550 AD, when his armies went into N. Africa and Italy. It almost ringed the Mediterranean except for parts of coastal Spain and coastal S. France. His successors did not hold onto these vast territorial gains. Northern Italy fell to the Lombards, a Germanic tribe. The Turks crossed the Danube and held onto territory. In the East territories were eaten up by the Persians and by the Sassanid Empire. Technically the Empire didn’t end till 1453 with the defeat of Constantinople by the Ottoman Turks
